This directive follows the government’s recent plan to have prisoners contribute to taxes through work. In collaboration with stakeholders like the Chandaria Foundation, the government aims to create income-generating activities in prisons.
This includes constructing bakeries and enhancing workshops to provide prisoners with job skills and work experience.
Correctional Services PS Salome Beacco mentioned that the government has outlined eight pillars to support this initiative, focusing on revitalizing prison farms, establishing industries, and enhancing education, housing, road construction, environmental management, legal services, and electronic revenue collection.
These efforts aim to ensure prisoners gain valuable training and experience before rejoining society. Currently, new bakeries are being set up in prisons located in Kisumu, Mombasa, Meru, Nyeri, and Eldoret.
